St. Thomas Cathedral Church Pala which is located about 39 Km from Kottayam town.It is believed to be the most ancient church in Pala.This cathedral belongs to the Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Palai. When the Portuguese invaded, the Pope took the custody of the church.When the diocese of Palai was erected by the Pope Pius XII on July 25, 1950, the authotity took the decision to build a new church. Its foundation stone was laid on December 1, 1953.
The cathedral was completed and blessed on January 1, 1981. The inspiration of the construction of the church is The National Cathedral in Washington D.C., USA. The most important festival of St. Thomas Cathedral is the Rakkulithirunal which is celebrated on 6th January every year. The festival symbolizes the Biblical representation of the three Wiseman from East who left for Bethlehem to adore infant Jesus.
